This version of "Americana" is a very special collaborative release in honor of the life of PA Sechler on the one-year anniversary of their passing. PA and I went way back. In college I was fortunate enough to have PA as an early and ardent fan of The Ellie Badge. I was even lucky enough to have the honor of PA doing some fan art for one of my songs, "Americana (The Doomed)." Nothing ever really became of it and after years and years I mostly forgot about it...
Years later, after their passing, I tried to think of something - really anything - I could do to honor their life. After stumbling across the cover art they had made I decided to try and do something positive. PA brought people together and I got to see that first hand when I invited Josh and Brennan from HEELS, Louise Page, Jesse and Jeff from Terry Prince & The Principles, and Paul "Snowflake" Taylor to join me in a brand new version of "Americana." We had a lot of fun coming together, working on this, and reminiscing about PA, and I hope that joy comes across when you listen to the amazing performances across this recording. I am honored and humbled to have people of this caliber playing and performing on a song I wrote and, more importantly, I hope PA can hear it and that they can feel their positivity continuing to radiate across Midtown.
In honor of PA's life and their struggles, we will be donating all proceeds of this release to OUT Memphis, an LGBTQ+ advocacy center in Midtown, Memphis, TN. Every single penny.
Thank you
lyrics
I don't wanna get stuck living in a small town; Let the world pass me by
Lay comatose and think about what happened to my life
I wish I could lose these inhibitions, maybe jump on the next plane
Head out West, start fresh some place where no one knows my name
Cause sometimes I get so lonesome I can't think
I just cower in the corner and I shrink
Sometimes I feel like nothing, like I don't mean a thing
Sometimes I wish they'd hurry and bury me
I eat at the same restaurants where the food all tastes like shit
I work the same old job because I can't afford to quit
I get crap from all my neighbors just because I don't go to church
But I don't think Jesus appreciates all of those dirty looks
I'm trapped inside a slice of Americana
A world controlled by plutocrats and thieves
It's nothing like the movies, no it's nothing like it seems
You know, maybe they've already buried me
Nothing ever changes; It's the same old scenery
There's no up's and down's or turn-arounds
and I think that's what I need
Cause I've got no inspiration - My muse is dead and gone
And without a change of pace I just can't sing the same old songs
Oh I wish that I had someone to rip my heart out
Fry it up and leave it on a plate
A breakfast for the buzzards - I hope they like the way it tastes
Cause I haven't got much use for it these days
